Reference requirements:

Whatever opportunity you are interested in, I am happy to help you with a reference.  Reference requests must be made in writing (via email) at least 2 weeks prior to the application deadline.  This is to ensure that I have the time to write a thoughtful and tailored letter. In order to provide you with the best possible letter of recommendation, I need some basic information from you:

  1. A brief description of the program or link to the program home page.  If you are applying to a specific lab or to a discipline-specific sub-program, please indicate this to me.
  2. Information regarding how to submit the reference.  Will I need to email someone directly (if so, provide the email address).  Will I be getting an email from the program with a link to an online reference template?
  3. A description of WHY you are applying to that specific program.  What interests you about this program?  What do you think you’ll get out participating in this program? How will participating in this specific program help you with your long term career goals?
  4. A resume or CV.  This is to provide me with some background information about your past experience.  While I’m writing your reference in the context of our relationship and the work you did with me while in the stream, it is often helpful for me to be able to allude to other opportunities or experiences you have had to emphasize a particular personality trait or character strength.

I will never write you a bad reference.  If for whatever reason, I feel that I will be unable to provide a positive and supportive letter of recommendation for you in general or for you to a particular program, I will let you know that you should consider an alternate reference up front.  I do, however, appreciate you ASKING for a reference.  Please do not ever assume I (or anyone else providing a reference for that matter) will be able to do this for you without speaking to me first.
